Argun Wetlands: Safe Refuge for the Red-crowned Crane

Wild Red-crowned Crane populations are in sharp decline in mainland Asia, currently hovering at about 1,200 birds. In contrast, the number of cranes gathering in the Argun River floodplain in the Dauria State Biosphere Reserve rose sharply, just as habitat conditions in Middle Amur deteriorated.

Scientific report by Igor Glushkov and other Russian scientists, presented at the “Desertification in Dauria” conference in October 2008, illustrates that the Argun River and Dalai Lake wetlands are equally vulnerable to drought. Thus, the principal justification for building the Hailaer-Dalai Water Transfer Canal is fatally flawed.
